thanks for giving

Sept 25 was the birthday of prolific author, cartoonist, and songwriter Shel Silverstein.

Shel is best known as the author of many children’s books, like “The Giving Tree” and “Where the Sidewalk Ends”. But according to biographer Lisa Rogak in “A Man Named Shel”, Shel never reallly considered himself a children’s book author, and told people that he just “fell into it.”

Shel got his start, in 1955, doing cartoons and illustrated travelogues, for (the just 2-year-old) Playboy magazine.

Shel wrote (and co-wrote) many, many songs, including “A Boy Named Sue”, “Sylvia’s Mother”, “The Cover of ‘Rolling Stone'”.

I design books, magazines, and other communications, that POP! I blog about stuff that catches my eye.
